REVIEWS

Perhaps the best, the most "spontaneous" of the Rodrigues family releases in 2023, is the "Polish" recording "Live at Spontaneous Live Series". Here the "core" trio of Guilherme, Ernesto, and Nuno Torres is joined by the two phenomenal Polish improvisers, Witold Oleszak on piano and Michal Gizycki on bass clarinet and soprano saxophone. The album starts with a delicate, minimalist duo of Guilherme and Michal, playing bass clarinet. The two highlights of the album, however, are the 31-minute-long improvisation by the "core" trio, and the most touching final track by the quintet, including all of the musicians. The latter lasts over 26 minutes and is full of unexpected changes in moods from very expressive to very lyrical. The soprano and piano lines are particularly touching, but everybody plays marvelously. Maciej Lewenstein
