77 Kids déploie un univers sensible, feutré, volatile, tout en nuances. C’est la parfaite musique de chambre d’improvisation où on joue pour le plaisir dans une écoute mutuelle, équilibrée, dans l’instant sans aucune arrière-pensée. Celui qui aurait pu croire qu’Ernesto Rodrigues était un gratteur de cordes sec et sans entrailles en sera pour ses frais. Il y a dans son toucher et les nuances moirées de la pression de l’archet une sensibilité authentique. Quoi qu’on fasse, le violon alto est un instrument exigeant et demandant une aptitude particulière, un travail intense pour obtenir un son plein, vibrant et dont la maîtrise et le contrôle absolu permettent de produire tous ces sonorités les plus fines et les plus extrêmes. Durant les premières années de l’impro libre, il y avait un seul altiste, le batave Maurice Horsthuys, un musicien relativement classique. Ces vingt dernières années, sont apparus Ernesto et la magnifique Charlotte Hug. Tout récemment, Benedict Taylor est vraiment intéressant. Trouvez m’en d’autres ! L’alto est vraiment difficile et notre ami portugais a bien du mérite. Donc, voici Ernesto Rodrigues au pays de la complexité. Bien sûr, y a encore une forme de réserve et des précautions par rapport à un éventuel excès gestuel et il s’en dégage un lyrisme intériorisé. Le souffleur Micha Babuske joue par petites touches en demi-teintes sans envahir l’espace sonore, restant ainsi au niveau du violon et de l’alto. C’est sincèrement un excellent trio. Pierwsze: Pre-filharmoniczny zgiełk. Wydaje się, że sala koncertowa jest stosunkowo duża. Początkowe zwarcie trzech instrumentów akustycznych jest całkiem intensywne. Muzycy sprawiają wrażenie silnie naelektryzowanych. Nie przeszkadza im to jednak prowadzić skupionej narracji, z dużą dbałością o niuanse brzmieniowe. Drugie: To, co płynie do naszych uszu znów moglibyśmy nazwać muzyką współczesną, prowadzoną jednak w permanentnym, zgrzytliwym i jakże urokliwym niedostrojeniu. Hałas, choć jest naszym udziałem, nie jest tu celem. Bardziej jest nim konstruktywna, trochę cząsteczkowa, molekularna improwizacja, poszukująca wspólnych płaszczyzn akustycznych. Wola artystycznego porozumienia, na styku sonorystyki i kameralistyki, charakteryzuje poczynania każdego z muzyków. Na finał nie zabraknie szczypty intrygującej pyskówki. Trzecie: Sonorystyka na piedestał! Mikrodźwięki w natarciu! Zmysłowa improwizacja zupełnie w klimatach strunowej edycji Spontaneous Music Ensemble (a na tych łamach to wyjątkowy komplement!). Flet basowy miażdży brzmieniowe niuanse skrzypiec i altówki zgrzytliwym przedechem. Strunowce wolą chyba filharmoniczne grepsy i starają się nie wchodzić dęciakowi w paradę. Czwarte: Micha ewidentnie się rozochocił, punktowo rozrabia na flecie. Biliana i Ernesto czują się zaproszeni do tanga. Flora akustyczna nagrania tryska fajerwerkami! Piąte: Strunowce walczą o przewagę sytuacyjną. Flet basowy z wyrzutami sumienia, ledwie jest muskany po ustniku. Ernesto plumka z lekkim zadziorem, Biliana rozpycha się łokciami. Niespodziewana eskalacja toczy się w trzech samodzielnych rejestrach. Każdy z muzyków, mimo, iż snuje prywatną opowieść, pięknie wgryza się w pomysły partnerów. Korelacja jest urocza, sympatycznie kompatybilna. Wybrzmienie smakuje rosą o zimnym poranku. Szóste: Biliana i Ernesto ślizgają się po strunach, flet pracuje na bezdechu i znaczy teren separatywnymi dźwiękami – Micha ma w rękach chyba kilka instrumentów jednocześnie! Mała filharmonia! Siódme: Muzycy w totalnym wycofaniu. Piękna symfonia zaniechania. Dźwięki dobywane są jakby mimochodem, przepraszająco. Na finalne wybrzmienie łączą się w dron, który zmysłowo podsumowuje ich spotkanie we troje. (Trybuna Muzyki Spontanicznej)
77 Kids uses a unique timbral universe full of nuance and subtly, using strings and winds in extended techniques and approaches drawing unexpected results from each instrument. The trio - Ernesto Rodrigues on viola, Biliana Voutchkova on violin, and Micha Rabuske on flutes & sax - works earnestly but not overly seriously as they bend and scrape, maintaining an even approach that is comprehensible and distinctive. There are moments that sound like a strange symphony warming up, and other periods that are right at home alongside work by AMM or SME, without having any sense of derivation. The consistency of their sound makes this a rewarding release, with unusual tonalities, ample use of space, and nimble activity creating distinctive aural tapestries. (Squidco)

The CD 77 Kids (Creative Sources CS337) finds Voutchkova in another small ensemble of mixed strings and winds, this time situating her violin with Ernesto Rodrigues’s viola and the flute, bass flute, soprano saxophone and bass clarinet of Micha Rabuske. The recording, made in spring 2010 in Berlin and released last year, features a music less poised on the edge of noise as was the live set with Thieke, but captures an elemental, deeply colored sound nevertheless. The playing on the seven tracks is spun around a pitch-based core, which makes itself audible through a semi-transparent surface of sheer sound. As much linear as planar, the music’s angular phrasing and fragmentary textures allude, obliquely, to the broken counterpoint of postwar European art music. It is a fine program of improvised music in which the three musicians demonstrate the nuanced interplay fostered by a close attentiveness. Daniel Barbiero
